Mosaics and Kits

Mosaic is the art of creating an image, pattern or picture using small pieces, often of glass. Glass Mosaics is an old art which has regained popularity in recent times. Glass mosaics are very suitable for stepping stones and other outdoor and garden application. With patterns from simple to very complex, mosaics made of glass can be created by children or highly accomplished artists.

The two primary methods for creating mosaics are the direct and indirect methods. In the direct method, glass is applied directly to an object - a vase or concrete block or the like. Glass nuggets (marbles with a flat side) work well using the direct method for young crafters. For the indirect method a pattern may be laid upside down on to an adhesive film (Mosaic Mount or resist work well). Once complete the entire piece can be transferred to a stone, floor or substrate of choice.

Mosaic forms come in many shapes and sizes and can be used to create multiple mosaics. Start with a coaster-sized form, a bird bath form, even a bench top form and fill with cement or DiamondCrete. You may wish to add colorant to the cement. Between glass pieces you will need to add grout, also available in many colors. Create a mosaic table with when you purchase a wrought iron table base kit. And finish your mosaic with Liquifusion a specially formulated clear coating for preserving your mosaic art.

Glass kits are a time-saver and fun. Kits can be used to build a class around, if you own a retail stained glass shop. Or kits can be enjoyable to make your self or as a project with kids of all ages.
